This year, you may have noticed an increase on your Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) – otherwise known as vehicle tax.
From April 1st 2019, vehicles were hit with a higher VED, impacting thousands of road users across the UK. The increase of VED rates for cars, vans and motorcycles was made in line with the Retail Price Index.
How much will my car cost to tax?
It all depends on the vehicle you have but the Office for Budget Responsibility predicts the average cost is £170 a year.
Vehicles in the UK are taxed based on the amount of CO2 emissions they produce, as well as when they were registered and what type of fuel they use. The categorisation can be quite complex on the face of it and you’ll need to refer to your vehicle’s handbook to find out its emissions and, therefore, which band your car fits into.
Your vehicle will fall into one of the following categories and be taxed according to the tax band it falls into:
- Cars registered on or after 1 April 2017
- Cars registered on or after February 2001 but before 1 April 2017
- Cars registered before 1 March 2001
- Motorcycles, mopeds and motor tricycles

Here are the car tax rates to cars first registered on or after 1 April 2017. These rates came into force at the start of April 2019.
