What car is right for you?

If you haven’t read the previous steps in this series then take a look back at Step 1 and Step 2, which provide advice on what car finance you should select. Or if you’d like more information you can read our full Car Buying Guide here.

In this post we look at the aspects you should consider when choosing your new car.

Step 3: What do you need your car for?

You should now have decided how you will pay for your new car and done all you can to make your monthly payments affordable. Now it’s time to start looking at what car you should buy based on your budget and needs.

Searching for a car

It’s likely that you have a few cars in mind, or even a list of favourites. But even if you have an idea what you want it’s still good to be open minded when looking at cars, especially if you have a poor credit history and need something practical and affordable. Our car search tool allows you to look for cars by monthly cost, make, model, efficiency, shape and transmission.

Don’t know where to start?

If you are completely unsure about what type of car is right for you then a good place to start is with your monthly budget (which you should have already worked out in Step 1 of this guide). Using this amount as a starting point you can then consider the following questions;

  • What will I use the car for?
  • Do I frequently make long journeys?
  • How many passengers will I regularly have?
  • Do I need extra space such as a large boot?
  • Do I need it to be fuel efficient and cheap to run?
  • Will I share the car with a partner or relative?
  • How much parking or garage space do I have?

Answering the above questions will help you narrow down what type of car you need.
